How to beat ATS keyword matching in under 15 minutes

You do not need to rewrite your resume from scratch for every posting. You need a repeatable 15-minute pass that adjusts emphasis, not facts.

Minutes 0–3: extract the signals

Read the posting once and copy out the title, the required skills, and the top three responsibilities. These are the signals that matter most to both the parser and the recruiter.

Minutes 3–8: reorder your bullets

For each of your roles, move the bullets that relate to those signals to the top. You are not inventing anything; you are deciding what the reader sees first.

Minutes 8–12: align the vocabulary

  • Use the employer's exact term when it matches your experience ("React" not "frontend frameworks").
  • Fix acronyms: write the full term once, then the acronym.
  • Make sure your job title line reflects the role you are applying for when honest.

Minutes 12–15: run the checks

  1. Confirm the file parses: headings intact, no columns, selectable text.
  2. Check keyword coverage against the posting.
  3. Read the summary line out loud. Would a recruiter know the role in five seconds?

This is exactly the loop PocketResume automates: it extracts the posting's key skills, reorders and reframes your real bullets around them, and scores the result against ATS rules before you export.
